Matt Ryan, the new president of football operations for the Atlanta Falcons, is actively working to improve the team’s fortunes. As the primary football executive, he ranks above the newly appointed general manager, Ian Cunningham. Ryan, previously the Falcons quarterback, is unexpectedly contributing on the field, especially during the team’s Organized Team Activities (OTAs).
During OTAs, Ryan is participating in offensive drills, providing an extra arm to throw passes to receivers. This involvement has caught the attention of players like wide receiver Jahan Dotson. Dotson, who joined the Falcons through free agency, expressed his surprise and excitement about working with Ryan. “I honestly had no idea he’d be doing that,” Dotson remarked. “It’s honestly pretty cool. You get the legend of Atlanta out here participating, throwing, catching passes from him. He’s a great guy, and it’s enjoyable to pick his brain and learn the game from him.”
The Falcons’ current 90-man roster includes four quarterbacks: Michael Penix Jr., Tua Tagovailoa, Trevor Siemian, and Jack Strand. Penix and Tagovailoa are set for a competitive battle during training camp. Despite Penix’s recovery from an ACL injury, he has been actively throwing in 7-on-7 drills.
Having Ryan, the 2016 NFL MVP, involved in these sessions adds value to the quarterbacks’ development. The team’s new head coach, Kevin Stefanski, acknowledges Ryan’s positive influence. “Obviously, he helps me every day, helps our players,” Stefanski noted. “His unique history with the city and this building is special. He’s been in those chairs, and now he shares his perspective, guiding this franchise.”
The Falcons, after missing the playoffs with an 8-9 record last season, share a division with tied Tampa Bay Buccaneers and division-winning Carolina Panthers. The NFC South appears open for competition this fall. While Ryan won’t be making the plays that propel the Falcons into the postseason, his expertise is seen as a significant factor in enhancing the team’s competitiveness this offseason.
