Maine Senate Race: Graham Platner’s Controversies and Poll Dynamics

6 days ago 0

Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing renewed scrutiny following reports about his past actions. According to the Wall Street Journal, Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, informed campaign officials in early 2023 that Platner had sent sexually explicit text messages to various women. This disclosure, which came months after their marriage in November 2023, emerged as Platner gained momentum in recent polls against Republican incumbent Senator Susan Collins. The primary on June 9 is crucial, with the election potentially influencing Senate control.

Platner, a Marine Corps veteran and oyster farmer from coastal Maine, has been involved in several controversies during his campaign. Reddit posts featuring offensive language and racial remarks, as well as a tattoo resembling a symbol used by the Nazi SS, have marred his candidacy. Platner apologized for his internet remarks and stated he was unaware of the tattoo’s meaning, attributing his past behavior to PTSD.

“I know who Graham is. I know the man I married and the husband he has been to me on the best and the worst days of my life,” Gertner told the Journal. She expressed being “deeply hurt” by the breach of privacy.

The race is critical as Maine’s political landscape is balanced between Democratic gains in presidential elections and support for moderate Republicans like Collins, who has held her Senate seat since 1997. Democrats view this race as a significant chance to reclaim a Senate majority.

Despite controversies, Platner’s campaign remains strong with endorsements from prominent figures like Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. However, issues from his past continue to challenge his credibility as a leader.

Key Developments

The disclosure to campaign aides about Platner’s texts was part of an internal vetting process last August. A campaign official stated that this matter was considered personal, left to be resolved between Gertner and Platner. The couple, who sought IVF treatment and faced a miscarriage, shared that they have since strengthened their marriage.

Former campaign political director Genevieve McDonald described the Senate as a platform for leaders with moral clarity, a sentiment echoed by some following Platner’s revelations. McDonald had resigned due to the tattoo and Reddit controversies.

Campaign aides learned that Platner had stopped these communications with women prior to launching his campaign. Gertner mentioned personal details were shared with someone she viewed as a friend, stressing the confidentiality of such information.

Poll Insights

Polls indicate a competitive race between Platner and Collins. A University of New Hampshire survey conducted from May 21-25 shows Platner leading with 51% against Collins’ 42%, with 6% undecided. The margin has narrowed since similar polls in February showed Platner at 49% and Collins at 38%.

Independents are split, with 47% supporting Collins and 44% favoring Platner. A poll by Pan Atlantic Research showed a 7-point advantage for Platner, with 11% still undecided. The poll surveyed voters from May 8-18.

Other polls, including those by the Maine People’s Resource Center and Emerson College, have shown Platner leading Collins by margins of 9 and 7 points, respectively. These polls reflect Platner’s continued lead despite contretemps in his campaign.
