Nicolas Cage recently discussed turning down roles in significant franchise films to pursue projects he found more appealing. In an interview with Complex News, the 62-year-old actor shared his reasoning behind these decisions.
Cage recounted two notable instances where he chose between roles. He declined Jim Carrey’s offer to join Dumb and Dumber and chose Leaving Las Vegas instead. In another case, he opted not to play the Green Goblin in Spider-Man in favor of a part in Adaptation.
Both those choices gave me more to do as an actor,
he explained.
Jeff Daniels filled the role of Harry Dunne in Dumb and Dumber and its sequel. Willem Dafoe took on the role of the Green Goblin in Spider-Man and reprised it in subsequent films.
Cage reflected on these choices, stating, I chose what I thought was better for me at that time,
and believes he made the right decisions. He found portraying twins in Adaptation particularly challenging but rewarding.
In Leaving Las Vegas, Cage depicted an alcoholic screenwriter, earning him an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. His performance in Adaptation, where he played twin brothers, garnered another Academy Award nomination.
While discussing his role in the upcoming 2024 movie, The Surfer, Cage recounted rigorous surfing practice which resulted in him encountering a dangerous rip tide. This experience led him to reconsider similar challenges, especially with a young child at home.
Cage has three children: Weston, 35, with Christina Fulton; Kal-El, 20, with his third wife Alice Kim; and August Francesca, 3, with current wife Riko Shibata. Family has consistently been his top priority, leading him to decline offers from major franchises like Lord of the Rings and The Matrix to remain close to them.
He told People magazine in 2022, First and foremost, there’s no version of Nick Cage in reality that doesn’t want to spend time with his children,
highlighting his commitment to family.
