Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs have reached the NBA Finals by clinching a decisive Game 7 victory against the Oklahoma City Thunder, winning 111-103. The win happened on Saturday night in a thrilling matchup held in Oklahoma City, marking a significant milestone for the Spurs.
Wembanyama was instrumental, scoring 22 points. Julian Champagnie added 20, with 18 coming from three-point shots. The victory propels the Spurs to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014, where they will face the New York Knicks in Game 1 this coming Wednesday.
Stephon Castle contributed 16 points, and De’Aaron Fox added 15. Dylan Harper chipped in 12, while Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell both ended with 11 points. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised the team, stating their potential to achieve championship greatness.
A crucial moment occurred in the fourth quarter when Luke Kornet blocked a fast-break attempt by Oklahoma City’s Isaiah Hartenstein. This prevented the Thunder from closing the gap to four points. Although Kornet only scored two points, his defensive moment was pivotal.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led Oklahoma City with 35 points and nine assists. Cason Wallace scored 17 points, while Jared McCain and Alex Caruso each had 12. Despite their efforts, this marked the eighth consecutive year that the NBA will crown a new champion.
In the series, the two teams experienced various swings of momentum. The Thunder led Game 3 by 11, while the Spurs dominated Game 4 by 18. Game 5 saw the Thunder ahead by 10, and Game 6 had the Spurs leading by 26. Unlike those games, this seventh game was tightly contested, putting the Spurs at an 80-77 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
The final quarter saw the Spurs solidifying their lead, while the Thunder, missing Jalen Williams due to a hamstring injury, couldn’t mount another comeback. Highlighting the difficulty of sustaining championship success, Gilgeous-Alexander noted the challenge of repeating the feat.
With an 8-4 season record against the Thunder, the Spurs proved dominant in the matchups that counted most. Wembanyama expressed determination for more victories, saying, “We want four more! We’re not done.”
