Crafting Mexican Pride Through Soccer Jersey Design

Mexican designer Hugo Rosas integrates national identity with soccer fashion. His jersey designs reflect Mexico’s rich cultural heritage, merging iconic symbols with sports apparel. His latest collection, titled Calados del Alma or Cutouts of the Soul, draws from ancient beliefs and the traditional papel picado, a delicate cut-paper decoration used in festivities.

Merging Tradition with Modernity

Hugo Rosas and his brother Andrés have operated a workshop near Mexico City since 2022. Their designs often feature themes like Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent deity. This figure symbolizes balance and a holistic worldview, echoing pre-Hispanic philosophies. Rosas’ earlier collection Ofrenda Viva, inspired by Day of the Dead traditions, illustrates how the living celebrate and remember their ancestors with joy.

“We try to create concepts that resonate with us and convey traditions that make Mexicans feel proud,” commented Rosas on his inspiration.

The jerseys are crafted from polyester, allowing them to be cut like papel picado while remaining durable. Although the use of natural fibers was considered, they could not meet the structural demands of the design. The creation process for each jersey is meticulous, involving symbol selection, design scaling, and manual stitching.

Artisanal Craftsmanship and Cultural Representation

The Rosas brothers emphasize artisanal methods, producing around 30 jerseys since April. They intend to increase production as the World Cup nears. Their Mexclart brand also features collections inspired by pre-Hispanic gods, including Mictlantecuhtli, an Aztec underworld figure.

“Putting on a garment like this is like wearing a modern armor through which we can carry that pride and passion for our roots and show it to the world,” stated Hugo Rosas.

Rosas often gains insight from historical literature and visits to Indigenous communities, where traditional practices endure. He aspires to infuse his designs with the authenticity and significance that mirror historical depictions of deities.
