Marxist political commentator and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker criticized New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill’s approach to anti-ICE protests at a Newark detention facility during a livestream. Piker accused the Democratic governor of aligning with the Trump administration’s immigration agenda through her actions.
Piker’s criticism followed Sherrill’s defense of deploying state police to manage demonstrations outside Delaney Hall, an ICE detention center. Sherrill asserted she would prevent unrest from escalating federal immigration actions in New Jersey, stating, I refuse to let that happen in New Jersey. I will not give ICE a pretext.
Piker responded dismissively, Yeah, I won’t give ICE a pretext. So I’m going to ensure that they don’t have to do anything because I’m going to do it myself. That’s basically what the meta is here for this blue state and its new blue governor,
he said.
Piker also criticized what he viewed as the centrist tendencies of the Democratic Party, saying, This is the centrist wing of the Democratic Party, ladies and gentlemen. This is what happens,
further broadening his critique beyond Sherrill’s response to the protests.
The anti-ICE protests continued outside Delaney Hall, with activists claiming detainees face poor conditions and lack adequate food, claims disputed by the Department of Homeland Security. During the stream, Piker accused Sherrill of furthering Trump’s immigration policies, stating, The story is not the far-left activists continuing to rage at ICE in New Jersey. The real story is the horrifying conditions inside of this facility … and the governor acting as though she’s powerless to put a stop to it, and using what power she does have to basically work alongside the MAGA movement alongside the Trump administration, because these are state troopers in anti-riot gear on horseback.
Piker accused state troopers of mistreating New Jersey residents and criticized the treatment of journalists, referring to reports that an Associated Press photographer was injured during the protests.
The streamer used the livestream to challenge Democratic lawmakers, accusing them of complicity in immigration enforcement policies. He stated, Democrats have absolutely participated in this process,
and emphasized the need for electing leaders who challenge the system.
Piker, who supports the Democratic Socialists of America, expressed his commitment to changing the system and shared his support for progressive candidates, including Tom Steyer. He continued his activism by campaigning for candidates like Adam Hamamy, amid media investigations into Hamamy’s background.
Sherrill’s office did not respond to comments from Fox News Digital. Greg Wehner, a breaking news reporter, can be contacted for story tips at [email protected] or on Twitter @GregWehner.
