Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Maine, thanked supporters in Bar Harbor as he navigates a challenging campaign period. His bid to unseat Republican Sen. Susan Collins has seen controversies including inflammatory remarks on Reddit, a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, and recent allegations from former partners.
“When hurtful things I said on the internet a decade ago came out into the public as I shared my personal journey through PTSD and darkness of recovery and accountability and growth. Maine had my back,” Platner said at a rally. “Now, as every single piece of that past and journey gets dug up, litigated, and weaponized, you have my back. And when politically motivated, serious and false, false accusations are made against me. Maine, you have my back.”
Platner’s campaign centers on an economically populist agenda, targeting corporate influence and advocating for the working class. Supported by progressive figures like Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, he is poised to become the Democratic nominee after Gov. Janet Mills exited the race due to trailing in polls and fundraising.
Platner has addressed his past actions, particularly his controversial Reddit posts and tattoo choices. He cited his difficult experiences with post-traumatic stress disorder and his time in the military.
During a recent rally, speeches in support of Platner also featured progressive leaders like Troy Jackson and Matt Dunlap. Rep. Ro Khanna emphasized the importance of opposition to misogyny and acknowledged Platner’s personal growth after his military service.
Sen. Collins, seeking her sixth term, commented on the allegations against Platner, noting they are “troubling” and calling for more answers.
The Republican National Committee actively criticized Platner through social media, highlighting his controversies. Meanwhile, some Democratic voices suggested that Mills could re-enter the race amidst increasing pressure on Platner.
Governor Mills has left her name on the ballot, yet her campaign remains inactive. Political insiders mention that she is fielding calls about rejoining the race, although there is no production toward a campaign at this time.
Khanna expressed confidence in Platner’s potential victory and highlighted the goal of defeating Collins as a unifying factor for Democrats.
The rally, attended by over 600 supporters, marked a significant fundraising boost for Platner’s campaign. Opinions among Maine voters remain divided. While some question Platner’s fitness for office, others believe he can bring positive change.
