A Decade of Government Shutdowns: The Need for Change

1 day ago 0

Over the past ten years, Americans have witnessed numerous government shutdowns that have negatively impacted the economy, security, and families nationwide. Each shutdown places American citizens at risk, with significant consequences throughout the country. The last shutdown resulted in a loss of over $11 billion, highlighting the severe implications of these events.

During recent shutdowns, travel disruptions were prominent, as funding for TSA was cut, leading to extended wait times at airport security. Air traffic controllers were unpaid, veterans and seniors struggled to access their benefits, and the Small Business Administration faced limitations in supporting entrepreneurs. Families reliant on SNAP benefits encountered difficulties, and service members faced threats to their pay.

Government shutdowns send a concerning message to the world, revealing that even America’s democracy and economy can be influenced by political disputes. For some politicians, shutdowns serve as a tool to score political advantages, but the American people bear the brunt of these actions.

The call for ending this chaotic approach to politics resonates with the public. Both political parties have historically contributed to shutdowns, and both bear responsibility for finding a solution. A bipartisan effort, led by a Senate Republican and Democrat, has introduced the ‘Prevent Government Shutdowns Act of 2026’. The aim is to ensure that despite budget disagreements, the public does not suffer due to congressional delays.

“If Congress fails to pass any of the 12 appropriation bills on time, an automatic Continuing Resolution (CR) activates to maintain federal spending at the current level. However, Congress members and staff must remain in Washington, D.C., and work continuously until the funding bills are completed.”

This proposal shifts the shutdown pressure from citizens and federal workers to Congress itself. Federal employees, including air traffic controllers and healthcare professionals, can continue their duties without being caught in political crossfire.

Although strong bipartisan support has been garnered, the bill fell three votes short of preventing future shutdowns. The longest shutdown in U.S. history has since occurred, prompting a growing desire within Congress to end this cycle of disruption. Support from diverse organizations, including the American Federation of Government Employees, emphasizes the urgency of the matter.

Enacting change in Washington’s established norms is challenging, yet necessary. The current system is ineffective, and alternative methods are required to resolve policy disagreements. Though differences in opinion exist, bipartisan agreement underscores the pressing need to eliminate government shutdowns once and for all.

Democrat Maggie Hassan represents New Hampshire in the United States Senate. Previously, she served as governor of New Hampshire. Republican James Lankford represents Oklahoma in the United States Senate.
