A Tale of Survival and Love Amidst Terror in Israel

4 months ago 0

Meet Arbel Yehoud, aged 30, and Ariel Cunio, 28, both born and raised in Kibbutz Nir Oz, a small community in southern Israel. Their lives, which began only a few footsteps apart, would be defined by an unimaginable ordeal of survival.

On October 7, 2023, a day that changed their lives forever, they were abducted from their home by Hamas terrorists. Arbel was held for 482 days, while Ariel endured captivity for 738 days. Though they were captured together, they were separated just hours later.

A striking aspect of their survival story is the role love played in carrying them through those harrowing days. As Arbel and Ariel reunite, it is clear that their bond proved to be a powerful lifeline.

Despite the quiet routines of their upbringing, where their parents were close friends, Arbel and Ariel did not plan to fall in love. However, love found them quietly and unexpectedly. Initially, they kept their relationship secret as Ariel was preparing for a long trip abroad, and it seemed as though distance would bring an end. Yet the distance only deepened their relationship, and upon reuniting, they embarked on a life together.

Settling into a modest home in the kibbutz, they created a joyful routine of shared activities such as cooking, dancing, and dreaming of a future filled with family and the familiar surroundings of their childhood.

In early October 2023, they brought home a puppy, Murph, feeling that their lives were full and peaceful.

Then, on October 7, their world was shattered as terrorists launched a deadly attack on Israel. The sound of sirens and gunfire filled the air. Assuming it to be the army, they locked themselves inside, only for their home to be stormed by intruders.

In the terrifying moments that followed, their beloved dog was killed before their eyes. They were brutally beaten, stripped of their dignity, and dragged away from their sanctuary, which quickly turned into a scene of destruction.

Ariel and Arbel were driven past a burning home belonging to Ariel’s brother and his family, unsure if they were alive. They endured the horror of being transported to Gaza, suffering further interrogations and separations.

Separated without proper goodbyes or the hope of seeing each other again, each faced inhumane conditions alone. Isolated by darkness, devoid of basic necessities, and plagued by constant fear, their greatest struggle was the crushing loneliness.

However, Arbel found solace in memories, creating a notebook filled with dreams of their future together, which eventually reached Ariel, becoming a source of hope.

Throughout their captivity, both Arbel and Ariel reached points of despair, but the thought of the other pulled them back from the brink. Knowing that one could not survive without the other became a crucial reason to hold on.

When Arbel was released after 482 days, her freedom was overshadowed by Ariel’s continued captivity. She grappled with guilt for enjoying basic freedoms while her partner remained imprisoned, sparking a determination to advocate for his release.

Astonishingly, after months of campaigning and against all odds, Ariel was liberated after 738 days. The couple’s relief was immense, although their life was irrevocably changed.

The place they once called home no longer exists, as a significant portion of their community was wiped out in the attack. Despite this loss, Arbel Yehoud and Ariel Cunio are together once more, forging a new path forward amidst the ruins of their past life.
