Air Force Officer Faces Possible Dismissal Over Anti-Trump Protest

A U.S. Air Force officer could lose his job and benefits if found guilty of charges following his call to impeach President Donald Trump. Major Jason Watson, decorated with over a dozen medals, remains at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington under orders to refrain from speaking to the media about his arrest.

His attorney, Christopher Mutimer, explained that Watson was arrested on July 1 for holding a sign requesting the removal of Trump and Vice President JD Vance. This act took place on the U.S. Capitol steps, a location where demonstrations are illegal without a Congressional sponsor.

Currently, he has no scheduled court date. The Air Force is investigating him for possible breaches of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which restricts political activities for those in uniform. Possible charges include contempt toward officials, dereliction of duty, conduct unbecoming an officer, and actions harmful to military discipline.

Should the case proceed to a court-martial, Watson may face separation from the Air Force and lose his pay and benefits if convicted, according to Mutimer.

Despite potential repercussions, Watson stands by his actions. He believes that the president and vice president’s Iran war actions breached the Constitution. He remains prepared for a possible court-martial.

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust through strict adherence to conduct standards. Misconduct allegations are to be thoroughly investigated, he stated, to preserve the military’s nonpartisan stance.

Major Watson was initially with Texas Democratic Congressman Al Green when he protested. When Green left, authorities instructed Watson to leave, after which he was arrested for refusing to comply.

A Capitol Police representative noted that while some areas allow demonstrations, the House steps do not unless accompanied by a Congress member.

Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan, an Air Force veteran herself, commended Watson for his courage. She acknowledged his awareness of the repercussions for his uniformed protest and criticized her Republican colleagues’ inaction regarding the administration’s conduct.
