Alex Abraham Shines for Geneva Baseball Team

2 days ago 0

Junior catcher Alex Abraham has made significant improvements over the past year for Geneva’s baseball team. His sophomore season saw him excel defensively but struggle offensively, ending with a mere .180 batting average and 15 hits. Honest about his performance, Abraham didn’t shy away from acknowledging his difficulties.

Recovering from an arm surgery in the offseason due to a ulnar collateral ligament tear in summer play, Abraham refocused on enhancing his hitting skills. He dedicated countless hours to batting practice before resuming throwing activities.

His efforts paid off. In a dominant 12-1 victory over Belvidere North in the Class 3A Sycamore Sectional semifinal, Abraham contributed a first-inning single, tallying his 47th hit of the season. Showing his versatility, he also scored a run and added a sacrifice fly, increasing his team-leading RBI total to 32. Geneva, boasting a 31-7 record, now eyes the sectional title against Rockford Boylan.

Reflecting on changes to his batting stance, Abraham said, “I used to have a wide stride. I simplified it.” This adjustment has been effective, as he enters games with a .411 batting average, second only to Mason Bruesch’s .438. On Wednesday, Abraham also achieved a walk in the fourth inning.

This season marks a turnaround for the Vikings, who dropped early in last year’s Class 4A playoffs. They now compete in Class 3A amid declining school enrollment. Abraham remarked on the team’s renewed energy and focus during playoffs, contrasting with last year’s overconfidence.

“We brought so much energy this year. We didn’t come out flat,” Abraham noted.

Geneva’s pitching strength also played a key role. Sophomore left-hander AJ Minderman flirted with perfection until the fourth inning, ultimately allowing just one run off four hits over 5 2/3 innings. Minderman’s postseason record includes a no-hitter in a 19-0 win over Streamwood.

“Minderman came ready to throw and we did things we needed to do to get runs,” Coach Brad Wendell said. The coach praised the reliability of the pitching staff, emphasizing its season-long importance.

Abraham highlighted Minderman’s consistent fastball velocity and diverse pitching arsenal. Meanwhile, junior outfielder Mason Bruesch showcased his skills, starting the game with a triple and concluding with two hits, two runs, and two RBIs.

Senior Ryan Kastor and junior Nelson Wendell each added two hits to an 11-hit team performance, further aided by eight walks, two hit-by-pitches, and 12 stolen bases. Coach Wendell noted the team’s aggressive approach on the base paths.

Abraham, elected captain by his peers, continues to thrive. Preparing to return to football after missing last season, he exemplifies leadership both on and off the field. “He’s been that captain in a lot of ways with his effort but also taking care of our pitching staff,” Coach Wendell added, praising Abraham’s abilities both behind the plate and at bat.
