Fundraising events vary widely, and the recent initiative in Gary for the Sojourner Truth House was a testament to community spirit. Titled “Walk for Stability. Walk for Community. Walk for Hope,” this event took place on a Saturday, with participants enjoying a stroll around the area. The event aimed to support the Sojourner Truth House, a day center providing resources for at-risk women and children.
Executive Director Angela Paul and Director of Client Services Pam King welcomed participants. The walk, celebrating its 29th anniversary, relies on peer-to-peer fundraising, both online and in-person, according to Volunteer Coordinator Airiel Crenshaw. This effort aims to increase awareness and support for those transitioning from crisis to stability.
Participants contribute by walking, donating, or forming teams, which helps fund critical resources such as housing support, food access, case management, and healing programs. Over 200 walkers participated, with residents expressing their dedication to the center’s mission.
The Sojourner Truth House, founded in 1997 by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, offers hospitality, recovery, advocacy, and housing. Community member Mary Turner emphasized the importance of supporting the center, having attended the walk for the past two years.
The event also included an information table by the Dedicated Strong Women of Embassies of Christ. The group members shared information, further underscoring support for the center’s vital role in the community.
Before the walk, Sister Kathleen Quinn, 92, praised the turnout, highlighting the sustained community backing for Sojourner Truth House. Community members, families, and local organizations participated, reinforcing the walk’s significance.
Sojourner Truth, born Isabella Baumfree, was a prominent advocate for social justice and women’s rights. The Gary center honors her legacy by empowering women and supporting social equality.
The 1.1-mile walk followed a marked route with cheer stations for encouragement. Participants concluded with a time of celebration featuring music, refreshments, and opportunities to engage with local vendors and organizations.
The walk sends a crucial message of solidarity, according to Crenshaw. It demonstrates a supportive community dedicated to providing pathways to hope and stability. Proceeds benefit the programs and services of the house, showing the community’s compassion and commitment to helping others rebuild their lives.
