Aurora celebrated the first graduation from its green energy job training program on Friday, marking a significant milestone for the 548 Foundation at the city’s CEJA Workforce Development Hub. Sixteen students completed the program, held in a once-unused city facility at 649 S. River St., supported by the state Climate and Equitable Jobs Act.
Mayor John Laesch praised the graduates during the ceremony, highlighting their future as first-year apprentices in the Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council. Graduates obtained industry-recognized credentials, including OSHA-30 Construction Certification and CPR/First Aid Certification, as noted by a city press release.
The ceremony, attended by friends and family, emphasized the personal achievements of each graduate. AJ Patton, founder of the 548 Foundation, applauded the graduates, expressing confidence in their future contributions to the marketplace.
Laesch emphasized ongoing work at the CEJA Workforce Development Hub, noting necessary improvements and expressing admiration for students overcoming challenging conditions. The transition of the building, formerly used by the city’s water and sewer division, is pivotal for bringing clean energy job training to Aurora.
Patton acknowledged Laesch’s influential role in the hub’s establishment, presenting him with a certificate for his contributions. The Illinois Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, signed in 2021, includes Aurora among 13 statewide job-training locations, aimed at boosting sustainable job creation.
U.S. Rep. Bill Foster also addressed the graduates, contrasting their situation with other fields affected by student loans and AI concerns. The confidence and pride he noted among the graduates is attributed to their career choice in sustainable energy and building trades.
The program ensures ongoing support, with weekly stipends helping students during their training. Mayor Laesch committed to facilitating job opportunities for graduates, such as a solar project on city-owned land, ensuring job prospects for the newly trained workforce.
