Austrian Court Sentences Man for Planned Attack on Taylor Swift Concert

1 week ago 0

A court in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, on Thursday sentenced a man to 15 years in prison for planning an attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna nearly two years ago. The 21-year-old defendant, known as Beran A. due to Austrian privacy laws, faced various charges, including those related to the concert. He confessed to the charges at the trial’s onset last month.

Despite the plot being thwarted, authorities canceled Swift’s three scheduled performances in August 2024. Prior to the court’s decision on Thursday, Beran A. expressed remorse, stating, ‘I would just like to say that I am sorry.’

According to reports, Beran A. planned to target fans outside the Ernst Happel Stadium using knives or homemade explosives. Tens of thousands of Swift’s fans had converged on Austria, eager to attend her Eras Tour. Following the concert cancellations, many fans gathered in Vienna to share their disappointment and trade friendship bracelets.

Authorities accused Beran A. of interacting with the Islamic State group before the planned attack. Prosecutors stated that the defendant discussed obtaining weapons and creating bombs, swore allegiance to the group, and attempted to purchase weapons illegally before the performances. A search of his apartment on August 7, 2024, revealed bomb-making materials, leading to the cancellation of the shows scheduled to begin the next day.

In an Instagram statement weeks later, Swift expressed her devastation over the canceled performances, saying, ‘The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows.’

Beran A. was tried alongside Arda K., another 21-year-old whose identity remains under wraps. Both, along with Hasan E., detained in Saudi Arabia, allegedly plotted attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the UAE during Ramadan 2024 on behalf of ISIS. However, only Beran A. faced charges connected to the Vienna concert plot.

The court convicted the two defendants of various charges, including training for terrorist purposes and being part of a terrorist organization. They were also found guilty of contributing to attempted murder, linked to Hasan E.’s alleged attack in Mecca in March 2024, which involved stabbing a security officer and wounding others before his arrest.
