Belgium’s Potato Glut and Its Economic Impact

6 days ago 0

Belgium has set a new record with its potato harvest, yet the situation is complex due to tariffs and increased competition. A thousand tons of potatoes piled 15 feet high sat unsold in Kris D’haeyere’s farm warehouse for months. Despite offering them for almost nothing, buyers were scarce.

In a drastic move, Mr. D’haeyere reintroduced the crop to his fields, disposing of enough potatoes to produce 200 million French fries. This action is being echoed by other farmers as Europe deals with a surplus of five million metric tons of potatoes suited for fries.

Belgium, well-known as the leading exporter of frozen fries, saw the market price for a metric ton of potatoes plummet to zero. Three years prior, the price was nearly 600 euros ($690). This drastic change has been attributed to multiple factors, both meteorological and geopolitical.

Exceptional weather conditions resulted in Europe’s most significant potato harvest in eight years. However, the market faced obstacles when tariffs from the Trump administration impacted exports and new Asian competitors grabbed market share.

Additionally, the war in Iran led to increased prices for energy and fertilizer. Consequently, profit margins have been squeezed tighter as energy costs rose, affecting consumer spending and the overall supply chain.
