Ben Auer Shines as St. Charles North Secures Regional Championship

This spring, Ben Auer of St. Charles North took on the role of the team’s ace pitcher due to necessity. The North Stars lost their top two pitchers. Keaton Reinke left for Northwestern football after early graduation, and Matt Ritchie was sidelined by injury. This unexpected turn thrust Auer into a leading position.

Over the season, Auer moved from a tentative role to confidently leading the team. “I’ve just embraced it throughout the year,” Auer stated. His growing confidence was evident as he pitched five innings, striking out seven without allowing a walk. He conceded only five hits and one run during a 3-2 victory over South Elgin in the Class 4A St. Charles North Regional championship game.

Auer also made significant contributions at the plate. He went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, playing a crucial role in securing the North Stars’ 11th regional title. His teammate, Ty Gleason, added two hits including a double.

Reed Raczka contributed with a triple and scored twice. Josh Kobylinski efficiently closed the game by retiring the final five batters to secure the save. St. Charles North, with a record of 22-12-1, will face Huntley, who holds a 30-7 record, in the upcoming McHenry Sectional semifinals.

For South Elgin, Zacharia Barkho matched Auer’s pitching efforts. He struck out seven in six innings, conceding two earned runs on seven hits. Alex Muro added two hits and an RBI for the team.

Despite limited pitching experience last season, St. Charles North coach Todd Genke had faith in Auer’s potential. Over time, Auer firmly established himself as the team ace. “He stepped up big time,” Genke said, acknowledging Auer’s commitment and competitive spirit.

Teammate Josh Kobylinski also benefited from Auer’s leadership, noting, “He brought us all together. It allowed people to take on more definitive roles.”

South Elgin’s aggressive offense initially challenged Auer but helped keep his pitch count manageable. He managed to strand runners on base in the early innings before encountering minor trouble in the fifth. Muro’s RBI single reduced the deficit to 3-1, but Auer responded with a key strikeout to end the threat.

Auer expressed satisfaction with his performance, saying, “I had to get my mind right, get the body right, and do what I do best.” Kobylinski successfully finished the game, holding off South Elgin’s best hitters in the seventh inning.

South Elgin coach David Palmer was pleased with his team’s effort. “We knew a couple of runs would make the difference with the wind conditions and the strong pitching,” Palmer remarked.

Auer relished the win, considering it redemption over South Elgin’s previous victory. “They beat us last year, so there was extra motivation this time,” he said. “We’re excited for the next challenge.”
