The Los Angeles Police Department released body camera footage on Friday that captures a contentious incident involving the shooting of a pet dog by an officer. This event has triggered a global backlash and scrutiny over police use of force.
The dog, a 2-year-old golden saint berdoodle named Jameson, was shot by a police officer the previous Saturday. The officers were responding to reports of a woman screaming at an apartment complex, a situation later revealed to be linked to Marie Marseille celebrating the New York Knicks’ victory in the NBA championship.
The video compiles footage from the body cameras of both officers involved. It begins with the officers approaching the apartment door, responding to a neighbor’s call reporting screams of “Oh, my god” for 20 minutes. In the recorded 911 call included in the release, it was noted that the concerned neighbor requested a wellness check.
The body camera video shows the officers at the apartment door, knocking and announcing their presence as police, nearly at 9 p.m. As soon as the door opens, revealing an unidentified woman, a gray dog in a blue shirt appears and barks. One of the officers asks the woman to restrain the pet before unholstering his firearm.
