President Donald Trump announced discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and representatives from Hezbollah have resulted in a decision to cease hostilities. The announcement, made on Truth Social, described Trump’s successful appeal to Netanyahu to call off a major military operation in Beirut, Lebanon.
Trump stated, “I had a conversation with Bibi Netanyahu today, asking him not to go into a major raid of Beirut, Lebanon. He turned his troops around. Thank you Bibi! I also had a conversation with representatives of the leaders of Hezbollah, and they agreed to stop shooting at Israel, and its soldiers. Likewise, Israel agreed to stop shooting at them.” He expressed hope that the ceasefire might last indefinitely.
The hope is that this agreement will bring lasting peace to the region.
On the same day, the Lebanese Presidency’s X account confirmed the agreement. The proposal includes a mutual cessation of fire, with Israel agreeing not to target Beirut’s southern suburbs and Hezbollah refraining from attacking Israeli lands. The statement noted that the “ceasefire framework” would extend to cover all Lebanese territories.
Meetings are set for Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss and solidify these developments. The two sides have observed a ceasefire since mid-April, as reported by the Associated Press. This agreement comes alongside ongoing U.S. negotiations with Iran.
This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
