Chinese Woman Wins Prestigious Fields Medal in Mathematics

For the first time, a woman from China has been awarded the Fields Medal, the world’s most prestigious mathematics prize. This year, two mathematicians from China received medals, raising the total number of Chinese-born recipients to three. The Fields Medals, often likened to the Nobel Prize in mathematics, are granted every four years to two to four mathematicians under 40, recognizing significant achievements and potential.

On Thursday, at the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia, the recipients of the 2023 Fields Medals were announced. Among them were Hong Wang and Yu Deng from China, alongside American mathematician John Pardon and Canadian mathematician Jacob Tsimerman. Ulrike Tillmann, vice-president and incoming president of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), commented on the momentous occasion, highlighting the significance of another woman winning the medal and underscoring the importance of women contributing at the highest levels in mathematics.

“All four mathematicians have made tremendous contributions to their respective fields,” Tillmann said.

Simultaneous Wins for Chinese Scholars

Hong Wang hails from Guilin City in China and is the first Chinese woman to win a Fields Medal. In a video released by the IMU, Wang reflected on solving her first math problem as a child, sharing her joy and clarity in understanding the subject. Working at both NYU and France’s Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, she gained recognition for resolving a longstanding issue, the Kakeya conjecture, alongside Joshua Zahl of the University of British Columbia. This breakthrough has paved the way for advancements in harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, and other mathematical fields, according to the IMU.

The dual wins by Wang and Deng mark the first instance of two Chinese scholars winning the Fields Medal at the same time. Deng, from Shenzhen, received acclaim for his research on underpinning physics with mathematical principles. His notable paper was co-authored with Zaher Hani of the University of Michigan and Xiao Ma. The IMU praised his work as a major advancement in understanding the laws of physics from fundamental principles.

American John Pardon was acknowledged for his accomplishments in topology and geometry, while Jacob Tsimerman of Canada was recognized for extending logical frameworks within algebraic geometry.

Historic Achievements and Reactions

Before the awards ceremony, the recipients’ names leaked due to a website vulnerability, unveiling them ahead of schedule. On China’s social media, the announcement of the winners was met with widespread celebration and pride.

Some social media users expressed excitement over the achievement of Chinese mathematicians, while others contemplated the implications for Chinese higher education. Despite Wang and Deng starting their academic journeys at Peking University, much of their training and research took place in the United States and Europe. Observers on the RedNote app speculated on why many opt to further their studies abroad.

The announcements of the Fields Medals coincide with China’s recent efforts to entice foreign talent by launching initiatives to counter the perceived brain drain. Projects like the “K-visa” and QiMing aim to attract international and overseas Chinese experts in STEM fields.

Other awards announced alongside the Fields Medal include the Chern Medal for Oxford’s Graeme Segal and the Abacus Medal for Shayan Oveis Gharan from the University of Washington. Each Fields Medalist is honored with a gold medal featuring Archimedes and a cash prize of 15,000 Canadian dollars, roughly $11,000 USD.

Yu Deng emphasized the intrinsic motivation beyond fame or money, driven by sheer curiosity and the satisfaction of problem-solving in the mathematical realm. “Our understanding of the physical universe on the mathematical level is still extremely small,” Deng said. “The joy of a well-executed plan and solving challenging questions is what fuels my passion.”
