When shopping for seafood, you may face a choice between wild-caught and farm-raised fish. Wild-caught fish is often seen as a premium option. Farm-raised seafood is generally more affordable and widely available. Some believe farm-raised fish is of lower quality and harmful to the environment, yet it remains popular.
Understanding the Debate
The debate over wild-caught versus farm-raised fish is complex. Two seafood experts have shared insights on the differences between these options.
Mark Frisch, executive vice president of seafood distributor BSF, noted misconceptions about farm-raised seafood. “You have farms doing things certain ways, and you have other farms doing things different ways,” Frisch said. There are markets for both types of seafood.
It comes down to trusting the source, trusting the provider that they’re sourcing things the right way, and just doing a little bit of homework and educating yourself.
Frisch highlighted the challenge for consumers navigating seafood choices. They must consider labels, certifications, and species.
“If you compare this to how educated the consumer is around buying beef or chicken, where everything’s farmed, all they have to look for is: Is it USDA Choice or Prime?” Frisch said. He emphasized that such standards are not available for seafood.
Health Considerations
Dr. Kristin Struble, a pediatrician, explained health differences between wild and farm-raised fish. Wild fish often have a better omega-3 to omega-6 ratio due to their diet.
Farm-raised fish are often fed corn, soy, and other plant-based feeds. They may also receive astaxanthin supplements for color enhancement. This synthetic version is considered safe by the FDA.
Struble warned of mercury levels in some wild fish like bigeye tuna and swordfish. Salmon, either wild or farmed responsibly, is low in mercury and a good choice.
