Christian Pulisic, a standout player for the United States Men’s National Team, could not recover in time for the second World Cup game against Australia. After injuring his calf in the initial World Cup match, his return was delayed despite limited practice throughout the week. USMNT Manager Mauricio Pochettino revealed this update during a FOX Sports pregame broadcast.
In the match against Paraguay, Pulisic contributed an assist before being substituted due to his calf injury. This raised questions about his availability for the next game. Pochettino provided some hope by noting on Thursday that Pulisic was improving and should at least be available for the upcoming group stage match against Turkey.
Despite efforts to prepare, Pochettino announced Pulisic’s absence from the pitch on Friday. They had a meeting planned Thursday night between the staff and Pulisic. However, it seems that Pulisic was not prepared to play.
Pulisic’s absence shifts pressure onto USMNT. Sebastian Berhalter replaced him at halftime in the first match, while Malik Tillman’s performance rose in his absence. With Australia beating Türkiye in their initial match, their upcoming game with the U.S. will decide who leads Group D.
A win would mark the first time the United States has won consecutive World Cup games since the tournament’s inception, guaranteeing a spot in the knockout round. Pulisic’s absence, however, poses a challenge for the team.
