Inglewood, Calif. — During the U.S. men’s soccer World Cup opener against Paraguay, Christian Pulisic was substituted at halftime after experiencing tightness in his left calf. U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino reported that Pulisic suffered a kick two days before the match. Despite the injury concern, Pulisic performed excellently in the first half, assisting a goal by Folarin Balogun, contributing to the team’s 4-1 victory.
At the halftime break, the decision to substitute Pulisic was made as a precaution to maintain the team’s 3-0 lead. Pochettino expressed hope that the injury would not pose a significant problem, stating, “Hope that is not a big issue. That was so rushed, because it was in the last minute that we need to change and do the substitution. But now I think it’s better, and hope for the next game he will be available.”
This match marked the first World Cup game played on U.S. soil since 1994. The U.S. team is scheduled to face Australia next, on June 19, in Seattle.
Pulisic commented on his situation, remaining optimistic about a quick recovery: “I just got a bit of a kick in the first half, so I’m really hoping that it’s nothing. Taking a little bit of precaution today but I’m hoping I’ll be fine in the next few days. I’ve had similar things before and yeah, I’m staying positive. I don’t think it’s anything at all.”
