Chaos erupted between “Save Girls Sports” activists and pro-LGBTQ activists outside a California championship track meet. The incident involved a trans athlete, AB Hernandez, as police officers were called to the scene.
The press conference was organized by California LGBTQ advocacy groups, Pride at the Pier and Rainbow Families Action. It took place outside the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state championship in Clovis. AB Hernandez aimed to win state titles in three girls’ jumping events. Hernandez’s mother, Nereyda Hernandez, spoke alongside other LGBTQ advocates in support of the trans athlete.
Near the press conference’s end, “Save Girls Sports” activists arrived, prompting a heated exchange with participants. The Clovis Police Department positioned vehicles nearby and dispatched multiple officers to monitor the situation as tensions rose. The confrontation eventually ended without direct police intervention, and the Clovis Police Department declined to comment.
Prominent “Save Girls Sports” activist Beth Bourne, who led the counterprotest, spoke to the media. Bourne expressed her views on fairness in sports and shared concerns about Hernandez’s situation.
Daisy Gardner, a pro-LGBTQ activist, addressed Bourne’s stance in an interview, expressing hope for learning and understanding.
The CIF state finals have been surrounded by controversy due to Hernandez’s participation for the second consecutive year. Last year, protests occurred, leading to the arrest of a pro-transgender activist on assault charges involving a “Save Girls Sports” activist.
