Controversies Surround Graham Platner’s Senate Campaign

5 days ago 0

Graham Platner’s U.S. Senate campaign faced new scrutiny as reports emerged of his past exchanges of sexually explicit text messages with several women. His wife, Amy Gertner, addressed the reports with a public response over the weekend. Platner is vying for the Democratic nomination in Maine, aiming to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in a crucial race for Democrats.

In a video Gertner shared on X, she referred to the coverage of the texts as ‘gossip’ and emphasized the complexities of marriage. She stated, ‘I find it really shameful that there’s a group of media outlets and people who are willing to spread gossip. No marriage is perfect, and I don’t want a perfect marriage, I want my marriage.’

The Wall Street Journal initially reported that Gertner informed Platner’s campaign about the texts she discovered on his phone earlier in their relationship. She hoped this disclosure would prevent potential political issues. Campaign aides ultimately viewed the texts as a private matter between the couple, who married in 2023.

Our marriage counselor helps, my personal counselor helps, Graham’s personal counselor. Graham and I have a great marriage.

Gertner reaffirmed their commitment to working through marital challenges.

Platner’s campaign has faced other controversies as well. He once had a tattoo recognized as a Nazi symbol, which he claimed ignorance of until the campaign was underway. Additionally, he encountered criticism for now-deleted Reddit posts that trivialized military sexual assaults and included homophobic language.

Despite these issues, Platner successfully advanced in the Democratic primary after Gov. Janet Mills withdrew from the race. Platner’s campaign has not responded to requests for comment on the recent revelations.
