The Miami Deal That Wasn’t

In 2006, Brees was recovering from a serious shoulder injury sustained during his time with the San Diego Chargers. The Miami Dolphins seemed certain to acquire him. With former coach Nick Saban at the helm, and after a 9-7 season, Miami appeared perfect on paper. “On paper, it was Miami all the way,” Brees shared.

Wayne Huizenga, the Dolphins’ former owner, went to great lengths to attract Brees to Miami. Brees recalled enjoying dinner on Huizenga’s yacht while discussing the benefits of playing in Florida. “I’m like, ‘Dude, this is wallpaper. Miami, here I come,'” Brees recounted.

However, during medical evaluations, Miami’s staff expressed significant doubts. “I’m in Miami in an MRI tube for two hours,” Brees explained. Their doctors assessed only a 25% chance that his shoulder would recover fully, causing Miami to shy away from a deal.

New Orleans Takes a Chance

As Miami hesitated, the New Orleans Saints saw an opportunity. Despite the city still grappling with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Saints were optimistic. “New Orleans was six months post-Katrina,” Brees noted.

The Saints, with their newly appointed head coach Sean Payton and general manager Mickey Loomis, pursued Brees relentlessly. “I go to New Orleans and it was like, ‘You are our guy,'” Brees said. The team committed to building their offense around him.

Driving through New Orleans, Brees observed the city’s devastation—upended vehicles, displaced houses, and a tugboat in the road. Witnessing this, he realized he could play a role beyond football, aiding in the city’s recovery.

Ultimately, Brees decided to join the Saints, moved by a sense of purpose and community responsibility. “This is God’s calling in our life,” he expressed.
