Brian Urlacher, a former NFL player, finds himself captivated by WNBA player Sophie Cunningham. Although not initially a fan of the league, Urlacher described Cunningham’s playing style as aggressive and fun to watch during an interview with Fox News Digital. He follows her on Instagram and appreciates the engaging content she shares.
Urlacher has become an even bigger fan of Cunningham, especially after she voiced her opinions on transgender athletes in women’s sports. Cunningham stated, “Young girls shouldn’t have to go against biological men” in sports. Urlacher supports her viewpoint, expressing his frustration at the controversy surrounding it.
“She says common-sense things, and she gets backlash. Men should not be playing in women’s sports. Why is that so controversial?” Urlacher shared.
The Hall of Famer admires Cunningham for standing by her opinions. He believes in the importance of individuals standing firm when expressing their views.
“When people say things, don’t back down. She backed it up and is not backing down, despite criticism,” Urlacher stated. “It’s an 80-20 issue. Eighty percent of the country agrees. The 20% is criticizing. I love everything she stands for.”
Both Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark are prominent players in the WNBA. Cunningham has recently seen a surge in support following her statements, despite potential risks, given the league’s liberal and predominantly gay environment. Urlacher has no issue with the league’s climate, mentioning his own family connections to the LGBTQ community.
“She said what she said. She took a risk, standing by her beliefs,” Urlacher added.
Cunningham’s comments have drawn support from Republican lawmakers and advocates for women’s sports including Senators Ted Cruz and Eric Schmitt.
In response to the support and criticism, Cunningham remarked on the importance of protecting children in sports. She remains committed to her beliefs and morals.
“I’ll always believe in that. It’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category,” Cunningham stated.
While Cunningham is not politically inclined, she feels strongly about standing on her principles.
