Escalating Conflict in Lebanon Amid U.S.-Iran Tensions

5 days ago 0

On Monday, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered military strikes on Hezbollah-controlled areas in Beirut’s southern suburbs. This action suggests an escalation in the conflict, which complicates mediation efforts in the U.S.-Iran conflict.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, highlighted Israeli attacks in Lebanon as a key reason for delays in diplomatic proceedings to end the U.S.-Iran war. He stressed that achieving a ceasefire in Lebanon is essential for any agreement.

According to a statement from Netanyahu’s office, he and Defense Minister Israel Katz directed strikes on “terrorist targets” in the southern suburbs of Beirut, known as Dahiyeh. They cited Hezbollah’s “repeated violations” of a ceasefire and “attacks against our cities and citizens” as justification.

Despite the ongoing hostilities in southern Lebanon, Israel had only executed two strikes in Dahiyeh following a Lebanon ceasefire announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on April 16.

900-Year-Old Castle Captured

The recent escalation followed a weekend of increased hostilities, during which Israeli troops captured the 900-year-old Beaufort Castle. Netanyahu ordered further military expansion on the ground.

Lebanese sources reported over 3,370 fatalities in the country since March 2, after Hezbollah began firing at Israel in support of Iran, which itself was under U.S.-Israeli attack. Correspondingly, Israel reported losing 24 soldiers and four civilians.

Israel established a self-declared security zone in southern Lebanon, claiming it aims to protect northern Israel from Hezbollah fighters.

The Lebanon conflict represents the most severe fallout from the U.S.-Israeli confrontation with Iran and has displaced over a million people, according to Lebanese authorities.

Amidst this violence, Netanyahu instructed further expansion of Israel’s ground maneuvers in Lebanon, targeting areas previously under Hezbollah control.

International Diplomatic Efforts

The escalation prompted France to call for an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting.

The U.S. has facilitated rare meetings between Israeli and Lebanese representatives. A U.S. official reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio conversed with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Netanyahu regarding peace negotiations.

As a diplomatic effort, the U.S. proposed that Hezbollah halt all attacks on Israel, while Israel would agree not to escalate actions in Beirut.

LPSpeaker Nabih Berri, aligned with Hezbollah, promised “full commitment to a ceasefire by the resistance,” but questioned who would ensure Israel ceases its aggression.
