Andrew Lewis, known for his dramatic performances during the Super Bowl halftime show, tragically died in a BASE jumping accident in Utah’s remote canyons. Alongside him, Danny Joe Kregle also perished in the mishap, reported the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred in Mineral Bottom, a secluded desert spot known for extreme sports activities yet notorious for poor cellular reception, making it a challenging area to access promptly.
Andrew Lewis, aged 39, had gained prominence for his daring feats in extreme tightrope walking, executed above majestic natural landscapes. He also managed BASE Jump Moab, an adventure sports company that organized outings like BASE jumping—a sport involving parachuting from high structures or natural features.
Danny Joe Kregle, in his 50s, was coupled with Lewis for a tandem BASE jump. Sheriff Jamison Wiggins noted that Mr. Kregle succumbed immediately, whereas Lewis survived the impact and fought for life for three hours with medical teams striving in vain to save him.
The sheriff’s office continues its inquiry into how the accident unfolded and the relationship between Lewis and Kregle. Despite past incidents near Mineral Bottom, the area remains a favored destination for BASE jumpers, offering excitement yet posing inherent risks.
Authorities have yet to disclose further details, maintaining focus on the investigation into the accident’s specifics.
