1 hour ago 0

Justin Gaethje secured a remarkable victory at UFC Freedom 250. The event took place in Washington, D.C., right outside the White House. Gaethje defeated the previously unbeaten Ilia Topuria in a UFC Lightweight Championship unification fight on Sunday.

Despite being considered an underdog, the 37-year-old Gaethje dominated the fight. From the onset, he delivered powerful blows, leaving Topuria with a bloodied face. Throughout the match, Gaethje continued to inflict damage with effective kicks and punches.

By the end of the fourth round, a member of Topuria’s corner intervened. They halted the fight due to the extensive damage Topuria had endured. Consequently, Topuria had to leave with assistance and received medical attention at a hospital afterward.

Gaethje’s win crowned him the undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion. However, he chose not to disclose his retirement plans immediately. Former champion Demetrious Johnson advised Gaethje to consider retiring while at the pinnacle of his career.

“There is nothing left for Justin Gaethje to do. He’s made so much money, he is an undisputed lightweight champion,” Johnson commented in a YouTube video, following the event.

Johnson emphasized that retiring after such a momentous victory over Topuria would be wise. “You retire on top, you save your brain cells, you ride off into the sunset,” he added. Johnson, known as “Mighty Mouse,” enjoyed a stellar career from 2006 to 2023. He achieved a 25-4-1 record and retired after successfully defending the ONE Flyweight Championship in 2023. Johnson is set to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame on July 9.

During a post-fight interview inside the cage, Joe Rogan asked Gaethje about potential retirement. Gaethje revealed he promised his mother to delay such a decision until after the fight.

Gaethje boasts a 28-5 career record, with 21 wins by knockout. The victory over Topuria marked his third consecutive win. His last defeat was to Max Holloway in April 2024. He has also lost to renowned fighters like Dustin Poirier, Charles Oliveira, and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Athletes often face a challenging choice: to retire triumphantly or continue, risking a decline. Gaethje’s recent triumph could serve as an ideal ending to his MMA career.
