In preparation for the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, FIFA has introduced a new rule aimed at addressing player conduct during matches. The rule specifies that any player who covers his mouth “in a confrontational situation with an opponent” will be subject to a red card. The International Football Association Board (IFAB) approved this regulation unanimously in late April.
Miguel Almiron, a prominent player for Atlanta United and the Paraguay national team, made headlines as the first footballer to receive a red card under this new rule. This incident occurred shortly before halftime during Paraguay’s 1-0 victory over Turkiye on June 19.
Following this event, Australia midfielder Jackson Irvine publicly expressed his viewpoint on the rule. Known for his candid opinions, Irvine commented, “The rule itself? Listen, I think it’s clear,” in an interview with ESPN Australia & NZ. He acknowledged the potential for controversy but emphasized the importance of transparency in communication.
Irvine referred to past incidents, including a situation involving Vinicius Junior, a player for Real Madrid. During a UEFA Champions League match in February, Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni used his jersey to cover his mouth while speaking to Vini Jr. Vini Jr. accused Prestianni of using abusive language, leading to a six-match ban for Prestianni by UEFA.
The public response to Irvine’s stance was largely positive, with many appreciating his straightforward approach. The sentiment expressed by Tipping Pitches captures the mood: “Oh, so it IS possible for an athlete to give a simple, clear-eyed answer about a sport making a good faith effort to create an inclusive and equitable environment.”
This new rule aims to reduce incidents of verbal abuse and create a more inclusive and fair playing environment. FIFA’s decision to enforce measures against players obscuring their speech reflects its commitment to maintaining integrity within the sport.
