Florida Paramedic Sentenced for Sexual Assault in Ambulance

4 months ago 0

A former paramedic from Florida has been sentenced to a 10-year prison term following accusations of sexual assault on an unconscious woman in an ambulance. James Melady, aged 39, was deemed guilty by prosecutors of recording the incident, a situation that added to the gravity of his crime.

Upon his release, Melady will undergo a five-year probation period and must register as a sex offender, as reported by FOX35 Orlando. Florida State Attorney R.J. Larizza strongly criticized Melady’s actions, describing them in severe terms.

The defendant was a first responder who raped an unconscious patient when he was supposed to be providing her with proper medical care. His crime was disgusting, demented, and deserving of the maximum sentence permissible by law.

Employed with Flagler County Fire Rescue at the time, Melady was accused of assaulting the woman during an ambulance ride to a hospital in October 2021. Investigations by the Daytona Beach Police Department later uncovered two video recordings on Melady’s phone, which allegedly captured the assault.

Melady initially maintained that his actions were part of a medical examination, in which he filmed himself inappropriately touching the patient. Further testimony from the victim, interviewed by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed she was oblivious to the attack.

A jury convicted Melady of sexual battery by an individual aged 18 or older, yet he was exonerated from another charge of video voyeurism.

In addition to this case, Melady faces ongoing legal troubles related to two separate theft incidents in Flagler and Volusia counties. Prosecutors claim he appropriated credit cards and personal identification from patients during emergency medical services, subsequently using this information for fraudulent purchases.
