France Battles Wildfires with Military Support; Major Events Impacted

France Deploys Military Cargo Plane

France sent a large military cargo plane to combat raging wildfires by dropping tons of flame retardants. This was part of efforts to fight fires forcing tens of thousands to evacuate.

The wildfires have displaced over 250,000 individuals across southern Europe, including 70,000 from central Spain. The city of Manises reported one fatality due to the blazes.

In France, the A400M transporter was used to drop ochre-colored retardant over drought-affected areas near Bordeaux. Ground fire crews were actively fighting the flames.

Impact on Major Events and Security

The Tour de France’s final stage was shortened due to the wildfires. Security personnel were redeployed to assist with the fires. The race will occur inside Paris rather than starting from Thoiry, covering a reduced 55-mile circuit instead of the planned 82.5-mile route.

Race organizers and Paris police emphasized the need for ‘exceptional measures.’ A segment of the race’s security team will reinforce wildfire response efforts.

Changing Winds Cause Concern in Bordeaux

The winds were predicted to shift from west to east, potentially driving the fire closer to Bordeaux. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the situation as challenging, despite initial progress against the blaze.

The Gironde region’s prefect noted that a ‘firestorm’ developed, although there was some reduction in intensity overnight. Precautionary measures were taken with evacuations ordered for areas between the fire and Bordeaux.

1.5 million face masks were supplied to protect against smoke. The Prime Minister emphasized the unprecedented nature of the fires which generated their own winds.

Bordeaux opened facilities for evacuees, offering food and shelter. The city’s airport remained open, although transport services were suspended.

Magnitude and Response

The French military’s A400M, adapted for fire-fighting, joined a fleet of aircraft battling the fires. Authorities were surprised by the intensity of wildfires fueled by climate change and exceptionally high temperatures.

Spain’s fire spread made direct combat difficult. Residents sometimes resorted to boats for evacuation.

International Assistance and Climate Factors

Spain deployed 2,600 emergency personnel, 19 aircraft, supported by France’s 1,400 firefighters and several others in affected areas. Successive heat waves with record temperatures turned forests into tinderboxes.

Wildfires have burned 130,000 hectares in Spain, surpassing the annual average. Favorable weather on Saturday offered fire crews a chance to gain control.

European nations such as Italy, Greece, and others provided or planned assistance with water-dumping efforts.
