Gov. Mikie Sherrill Joins Protests Against Trump’s Immigration Policies

2 weeks ago 0

Gov. Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat, stood with protesters outside a New Jersey immigration detention center in support of detainees on hunger strike. The protests took place at Delaney Hall in Newark, where detainees had been striking for four days. Sherrill, known for her opposition to President Trump’s immigration policies, demanded access to the facility.

Family members of the detainees voiced their concerns about unsatisfactory conditions, including rotten food and poor medical care. Protesters waved signs, played drums, and chanted, ‘Free Them All!’ in solidarity. Sherrill addressed the crowd, insisting that all individuals, regardless of immigration status, should be treated with dignity.

On Memorial Day, Sherrill dressed casually in a T-shirt, jeans, and jacket. She comforted distressed relatives and children at the protest. This demonstration was part of a broader clash between Gov. Sherrill and the Trump administration, which has faced national protests over immigration policies.

In a previous encounter, the Trump administration filed a lawsuit against Sherrill and New Jersey’s attorney general over a state law prohibiting law enforcement, including ICE agents, from wearing masks while on duty. Delaney Hall, a privately run 1,000-bed facility, reopened last year and has become a significant location in Trump’s crackdown on immigration. The center has housed immigrants detained from New York City and the Northeast as arrest efforts intensified in various locations.

This incident marked another legal challenge between the Trump administration and Gov. Sherrill, as they seek to reverse state immigration laws. The situation underscores ongoing tensions and differing approaches to immigration policies.
