Graham Platner, who is poised to become the Democratic nominee for the Senate in Maine, recently visited Washington. His goal was to connect with Senate Democrats amidst new scrutiny regarding past behaviors.
Platner, an oyster farmer, is campaigning against the incumbent Senator Susan Collins, a Republican with five terms under her belt. He invited the entire Senate Democratic caucus for a meeting, yet only about six senators attended.
Earlier in the day, Platner had a 30-minute private meeting with Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic minority leader. Two sources familiar with the meeting reported this session. Schumer had formally endorsed Platner’s primary opponent before she suspended her campaign a month prior.
Schumer faced questions from reporters at the Capitol about Platner. Reports had emerged that Platner sent sexual messages to women outside his marriage. These revelations have stirred concerns among some Democrats regarding potential unaddressed issues in Platner’s past.
Schumer stated, “I met with Graham Platner today. We’re going to beat Susan Collins and take back the Senate.” He deflected repeated questions about his confidence in Platner, instead reiterating the Democratic goal of defeating Collins. Before ending the media session, he mentioned once his endorsement of Platner.
