Investigation into Fatal Shooting

Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare announced readiness to prosecute federal immigration agents, pending investigation into the fatal shooting of Mexican immigrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. The shooting occurred by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on July 7. Teare assured the investigation is independent and transparent, emphasizing community demands for justice.

Statement from the District Attorney

“As we go forward, and if the case and the evidence directs us that criminal wrongdoing occurred, we are more than prepared to file criminal charges against the people, regardless of whether or not they are federal agents or civilians,” Teare stated regarding the potential charges.

His commitment stems from the principle that no one should escape accountability, even under the guise of federal authority.

Background and Department Response

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claims Salgado Araujo weaponized his van during a traffic stop, leading to the shooting. However, his family disputes this, portraying him as a loving father residing in the U.S. for over thirty years. ICE agents initially sought a different individual, which further complicates the situation.

The FBI is investigating the matter as a possible assault on a federal agent, while the DHS Office of Inspector General conducts a separate probe regarding ICE’s actions.

Challenges in Cooperation

Teare expressed astonishment at ICE’s lack of cooperation, noting his office does not know the federal agent’s name responsible for the shooting. Despite past experiences, ICE has failed to provide necessary information, which deviates from standard procedures.

He criticized ICE’s tactics, questioning their training and decision-making during high-pressure situations. This has sparked changes within ICE, suspending vehicle stops by deportation agents until further guidance is given.

Support for Witnesses

Efforts are ongoing to prevent deportation of the shooting witnesses, including Salgado Araujo’s brother. Teare’s office is assisting in securing U visas for the witnesses, allowing them to aid the investigation without fear of deportation. Their testimonies are crucial to the case.

Juan Proaño, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens, calls for federal assurance that witnesses remain in the U.S. to ensure a comprehensive investigation. He stresses the importance of their presence for justice.
