Influential Conservatives Raise Concerns Over AI and Media Bias

1 week ago 0

Influential conservatives are expressing concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) being used in a way that promotes political bias. They believe AI technologies, which rely on information from left-leaning media sources, may not be trustworthy for the average American as a news source.

AI systems are known to sometimes generate false, yet convincing information, which can undermine trust. Critics argue that chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude offer information with a liberal bias or prioritize information from left-wing media while ignoring alternative viewpoints.

The Media Research Center (MRC), a conservative body, has conducted studies to assess the reliability of these chatbots. Their findings suggest that the results are not encouraging. According to Media Research Center President David Bozell, “Silicon Valley’s shiny new toys can no longer be considered neutral and cannot be trusted.”

OpenAI’s ChatGPT initially claimed there was no credible evidence supporting the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Further, Claude, developed by Anthropic, was reported to resist incorporating the U.S. First Amendment into AI policies.

Recently, Fox News Digital reported on the controversial remarks of Democratic Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. His comments on a now-deleted Reddit account under “P-Hustle” included graphic sexual remarks and mocking a U.S. soldier wounded in combat.

Political strategists suggest Platner’s remarks could alienate voters, yet chatbots largely ignored the controversy when asked about his campaign developments. Gemini listed positive aspects of Platner’s campaign but failed to recognize Fox News Digital’s reporting on his remarks, citing a brief CNN video that showcased Platner’s “authenticity.”

ChatGPT also highlighted Platner as the presumptive Democratic nominee, focusing on political strategy without detailing controversial remarks. The first source used was a Bangor Daily News article that required a paid subscription to access detailed content.

Claude discussed Platner’s political background and rise, briefly mentioning his Communist statements on Reddit but avoiding recent controversies. The chatbot referred to a Time magazine profile published recently as context.

In 2024, an agreement between The Atlantic and OpenAI allowed ChatGPT access to archive data, enabling potential influence over platform algorithms. Atlantic CEO Nicholas Thompson commented on shaping industry values positively.

By 2025, a Pew Research Center study showed 57% of teenagers used AI chatbots for information. Pew also noted that inaccurate information was commonly encountered.

MRC’s Dan Schneider noted that Grok, an AI software, credited Fox News Digital reporting, affirming the ideological skew in AI systems. Per international scientists and personal observations, chatbots rely disproportionately on left-wing media sources.

Media watchdogs have noticed executives from ChatGPT parent company OpenAI, as well as Anthropic’s Claude, have connections to the Democratic Party, while Grok is led by Trump ally Elon Musk.

In March, a New York Post opinion article by Cambridge PhD student Malia Marks described how ChatGPT advised her against submitting a column to the Post due to its conservative affiliation. It suggested submission to outlets like The New York Times instead.

OpenAI and Anthropic have yet to comment on this issue. Google asserted that Gemini offers neutral responses without favoritism.
