Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Wednesday that Iran has requested a change of venue for upcoming discussions with the United States. This announcement confirms earlier reports regarding Iran’s desire to alter the meeting’s location.
Rubio elaborated on the situation in a session with reporters. ‘We had initially agreed upon Turkey as the meeting place, coordinated by several partners eager to take part,’ he stated. ‘However, conflicting reports emerged from the Iranian side, suggesting disagreement on the venue. Discussions are ongoing, but the U.S. remains open to engaging with Iran.’
A source revealed to Fox News that Iran proposed to shift talks to Oman, potentially complicating the diplomatic scene by suggesting a focus solely on U.S.-Iran interaction, excluding other regional nations.
Secretary Rubio refrained from detailing the agreed topics for the talks but identified critical areas he believes are essential for achieving productive dialogue, highlighting Iran’s ballistic missile program, its support for terrorism, its nuclear ambitions, and domestic human rights issues.
The Secretary also touched upon the anti-government protests in Iran, which have been ongoing since late December. According to Rubio, President Donald Trump’s strong stance against violence towards protesters was influential in preventing executions, although the Iranian regime has denied such claims.
‘There’s a significant gap between the Iranian leadership’s actions and the desires of the Iranian people,’ Rubio remarked, emphasizing the disconnection between the governing clerics and the population.
Amid these tensions, U.S. military activities have escalated. On Tuesday, a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier took defensive action, shooting down an Iranian drone that approached aggressively, as reported by a U.S. Central Command spokesperson.
Iran responded by asserting that the drone was operating a ‘routine and lawful mission’ over international waters, further fueling tensions between the two nations.
