Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israeli ground forces have crossed Lebanon’s Litani River. This movement coincides with upcoming military talks between the two nations, mediated by the United States.
Speaking near the Lebanese border while visiting troops, Netanyahu stated that the Israeli military had made significant progress into Lebanon. This advancement follows ongoing battles between Israel and Hezbollah, which have defied a monthlong cease-fire.
Israeli airstrikes continue to target southern Lebanon, with evacuation warnings issued for local towns and villages. More than 3,300 fatalities have been reported by Lebanon’s health ministry since conflicts resumed in early March.
The offensive is timely as Lebanese and Israeli military leaders are preparing to meet at the Pentagon. These discussions form part of US-led efforts to stabilize the border and end the conflict. Additional political negotiations are expected soon.
The Litani River acts as a historical boundary in the region. Israeli troops previously claimed areas beyond the river, accentuating their presence beyond the so-called “forward defense line” in southern Lebanon.
Tensions have heightened due to recent Israeli endeavors, including an airstrike near Beirut, the first since March. This response comes under pressure from within Israel for heightened military action against Hezbollah. Hezbollah’s drone assaults on Israeli forces remain a considerable challenge.
Friday’s Pentagon discussions are expected to prioritize Hezbollah’s disarmament, a significant Israeli negotiation point. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun communicated the importance of achieving a cease-fire with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Iran’s involvement in regional peace talks showcases Lebanon’s critical role. Tehran demands cessation of Israeli strikes against Hezbollah, complicating negotiations.
Israeli military head, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, reinforced Netanyahu’s declarations, stating that their forces are increasingly active in new territories and will continue targeting Hezbollah.
