Israel’s Influence on Eurovision
Israel has been involved in efforts to influence the Eurovision Song Contest for several years, aiming to enhance its international image and gather support. Recent investigations reveal that these initiatives were more extensive and began earlier than previously thought.
Yuval Raphael, representing Israel at the 2025 Eurovision in Basel, Switzerland, performed New Day Will Rise during the Grand Final. This performance was among the numerous attempts to elevate Israel’s presence on the Eurovision stage.
Diplomatic Challenges Around Eurovision Participation
Last fall and winter, Israeli diplomats engaged with European officials and broadcasters about concerns regarding Israel’s participation in Eurovision. These discussions became urgent due to calls from some European broadcasters to exclude Israel from the contest due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
It was reported that broadcasts threatened to boycott Eurovision, accusing Israel of manipulating results through extensive voting campaigns. Despite these allegations, Israel hosted far larger diplomatic issues at the time, including accusations from a United Nations commission of acts of genocide, which Israel denied.
There was also pressure from global leaders recognizing Palestinian statehood.
“I am a little bit surprised why this is a matter that the embassy is looking into,” expressed Stefan Eiriksson, head of Iceland’s national broadcaster, in correspondence with an Israeli diplomat last December.
Eurovision’s Role in Israeli Diplomacy
In recent years, Eurovision has transcended being merely a musical contest for Israel. It has evolved into a platform to counter its diminishing international reputation and unify global opinion.
The upcoming Eurovision this Tuesday follows a year of turmoil. Countries like Iceland and four others have boycotted the event to demonstrate their objection to Israel’s participation. Furthermore, the European Broadcasting Union, which organizes Eurovision, faces financial difficulties.
The voting results showed Israel leading with 33.34% of votes, followed by Ukraine and Poland, demonstrating Israel’s strong foothold in the contest.
