On Thursday, Britain’s defense secretary John Healey announced his resignation. He cited shortcomings in defense funding under Prime Minister Keir Starmer as his reason. Healey emphasized that the current funding levels leave the country vulnerable.
Mr. Healey, known for his strong support of Mr. Starmer, expressed his concerns in a public letter. He stated that on Monday, he received news about a new Defense Investment Plan. This plan, in his view, does not meet the necessary funding requirements to ensure the country’s safety.
Without a DIP that meets the moment in this way, I am being forced to make decisions that would reduce the readiness of our Forces and increase the risk to personnel on operations, and could make the country less safe,Healey wrote.
According to Healey, the prime minister’s strategy involves raising military expenditure to 2.68% of the gross domestic product by 2030. Healey had anticipated a rise to 3.5%, which he and Starmer had previously discussed.
Healey concluded his letter by stating:
After explaining to you that I would not be able to accept a DIP settlement that does not give our forces the resources they need, I am now left with no other option than to submit my resignation as your Defense Secretary.
