CNN anchor and chief White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins addressed President Donald Trump’s recent remarks directed at her during and after the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Collins, who received an award at the event, expressed her perspective in an interview preview with Jon Stewart for The Daily Show, airing Monday night.
Collins emphasized that the situation is not about her personal reaction. She cautioned against letting the exchange become a personal back-and-forth. According to Collins, the focus should remain on her journalism, the questions she posed, and the reporting that invoked Trump’s criticism. Highlighting the significance of her award, she noted that Trump’s reaction underscores its impact.
I don’t want it to be about my reaction… I think it’s more effective to remind people in those moments when he is insulting me or when he is criticizing me, about the question I asked or the reporting that I did that he was so angry about in this moment and the fact that I got an award for it really bothered him.
During the dinner, Trump criticized Collins by stating that she “never smiles” while he spoke to the audience. This remark continues Trump’s pattern of criticizing Collins for her White House coverage and questioning during press briefings. In a more dismissive comment, he labeled the award Collins received as “fake,” though he acknowledged it with sarcasm.
Following the event, Trump extended his critique by posting an altered AI-generated image on Truth Social. The photo manipulated a Bud Light ad featuring transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney by replacing Mulvaney’s face with Collins’. This online activity highlights Trump’s ongoing focus on the CNN journalist.
Collins is not the only female journalist Trump has confronted publicly. He has previously criticized reporters like ABC News’ Mary Bruce, Bloomberg’s Catherine Lucey, and CBS News’ Nancy Cordes after being challenged with difficult questions on various matters.
Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment, but no response has been reported. This story is still developing and will be updated as new information becomes available.
