Lake Central senior first baseman Tyler Thuftedal has found his stride at the plate. He acknowledges a slower start to the season but feels he’s now contributing significantly. Thuftedal expressed his newfound confidence, stating, “These last few games, I’ve been feeling like myself.”
During the Class 4A Crown Point Sectional first-round game against Munster, Thuftedal excelled. In his playoff debut, he went 2-for-2, hitting two doubles, scoring one run, and earning an RBI in Lake Central’s 13-3 win over five innings. Munster even walked him intentionally, surprising him given his earlier struggles. “I’ve definitely found it,” he said, emphasizing this positive change.
Teammate Jacob Forystek, a sophomore designated hitter, contributed greatly too, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, three runs, and two stolen bases. Lake Central (22-8) will face Morton (7-13) in the sectional semifinal. Batting seventh, Thuftedal elevated his average to .215, having entered the game with just three doubles this season. Lake Central coach Mike Swartzentruber remarked on Thuftedal’s performance and its timing. The coach had brought in a sophomore to play first base, challenging Thuftedal, who responded well. His improvement in hitting significantly impacted the recent games.
Last season, Thuftedal faced setbacks, going 2-for-7 and pitching 10 2/3 innings before a back injury sidelined him. This season, competing with Hunter Segal for positions enhanced his resolve. “I wanted to play every day,” Thuftedal remarked, explaining how it motivated his aggressive approach at the plate. Junior catcher Brayden Walls noted Thuftedal’s resurgence, saying, “His bat’s been coming alive.”
Munster, ranked fifth in the state coaches poll, initially led 3-0 in the first inning. Lake Central rebounded in the third with five runs, including a critical two-run single by Connor Friesema and a run-scoring double by Thuftedal to right-center. An explosive eight-run fifth inning followed, highlighted by Walls’ three-run homer, demonstrating their offensive momentum.
Lake Central sophomore pitcher Owen Kopercinski recovered after a shaky start, retiring 10 consecutive batters and closing the game with a strikeout in the fifth. Coach Swartzentruber commended his mental strength, noting it as key for the game. Lake Central has gone 14-2 since their previous encounter with Munster, showcasing continued growth.
The victory marked a special moment for Thuftedal, who described the game as “electric” and the most enjoyable of the season. The team’s strong performance sets a promising tone for the upcoming matches.
