Trump Supports Paxton, Criticizes Cornyn in Texas Senate Race

1 week ago 0

Former President Donald Trump criticized Texas Senator John Cornyn as “VERY disloyal” on social media. Trump expressed support for Cornyn’s opponent, Ken Paxton, in the state’s Senate primary runoff. Paxton is currently the Attorney General of Texas.

Trump highlighted Cornyn’s lack of support for the “SAVE AMERICA ACT” involving voter ID and mail-in ballot restrictions. “Vote for Ken Paxton on Tuesday, HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!!!” Trump urged in his Truth Social post.

Trump described Paxton as a “GREAT Attorney General” and “loyal” to him. The race symbolizes Trump’s efforts to replace politicians who oppose him with individuals aligned with his beliefs. This strategy has worked well for Trump in recent political contests.

Last week, Trump’s candidate Ed Gallrein defeated Representative Thomas Massie in Kentucky’s GOP primary. Additionally, Trump’s endorsed candidates, Julia Letlow and John Fleming, overcame incumbent Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy.

Reactions from Cornyn

Senator Cornyn appeared on NewsNation’s The Hill, distancing himself from other criticized Republicans like Massie and Cassidy. He emphasized his history as a Trump ally, suggesting the former president’s decision was out of frustration with the Senate. Cornyn stated his support for Trump’s agenda while selectively disagreeing.

Importance of the Race

The winner of the Texas run-off will face Democratic state Representative James Talarico in November’s general election. Talarico, who mixes faith-based language with progressive ideas, is viewed as a strong contender. Despite Trump’s past victory in Texas, Talarico offers a challenge to become the first Democrat to secure a Texas Senate seat since 1993.

Many Republicans align with Cornyn as they see Paxton’s legal issues as a risk. Paxton’s career has faced legal and ethical challenges, such as the 2015 securities fraud case, corruption allegations, and his 2023 impeachment, although he was acquitted. Paxton has denied any wrongdoing.

Senate Majority Leader Thune’s Support for Cornyn

Senate Majority Leader John Thune supports Cornyn, despite Trump backing Paxton. Thune stated, “none of us control what the president does,” affirming his continued support for Cornyn’s re-election. He praised Cornyn as “a principled conservative” and “effective senator.”

With Republicans defending 24 Senate seats compared to the Democrats’ nine, Thune remains optimistic about retaining control. He argues that successful elections begin with quality candidates, not just focusing on single states.
