Marco Rubio Discusses U.S. Immigration Reforms in India

1 week ago 0

Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed concerns from Indian officials and media regarding U.S. visa and immigration reforms. Indian authorities fear these changes may hinder migration from India.

Impact on India

Rubio clarified that while the reforms might disproportionately affect India, known for supplying many skilled workers to the U.S., the changes are not specifically targeting India. “It is a global application,” Rubio stated during a news conference in New Delhi.

India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar noted the challenges faced by legitimate travelers in obtaining U.S. visas, emphasizing the need for continued legal mobility for business, technology, and research cooperation.

America First Policy

Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, highlighted the importance of aligning immigration policies with national interests. “The United States is welcoming,” he assured, noting over a million people gain permanent residency annually.

Rubio also acknowledged contributions by Indian companies, mentioning their $20 billion investment in the U.S. economy. He stressed the modernization of U.S. migration policies is not solely a response to Indian migration but a response to broader challenges.

Modernization and Reforms

“We’ve had a migratory crisis,” Rubio acknowledged, mentioning over 20 million illegal entries in recent years. Reforms aim to modernize the system, addressing who enters, how many enter, and when they enter.

Rubio urged patience from India during what he described as a “necessary period of adjustment.” He projected a future with a more efficient system beneficial to the U.S. and international stakeholders, including India.

Period of Transition

Addressing concerns about anti-India racism, Rubio denounced such comments, describing them as remarks from “stupid people” both in the U.S. and globally. He emphasized the U.S. as a nation enriched by diverse immigrants contributing to society.
