Mayor Zohran Mamdani is lending his political influence to a recent TV advertisement promoting three Democratic candidates running for House seats in New York City. The advertisement, which aired on Wednesday night, featured during the coverage of the New York Knicks’ Game 1 victory in the NBA finals. It focused neither on the team nor on the mayor himself.
The purpose of the ad is to spotlight the candidacies of three Democrats with progressive leanings competing in closely contested House primaries throughout the city. The ad aims to leverage Mr. Mamdani’s popularity and tap into New York’s current enthusiasm for the Knicks.
The candidates include Darializa Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez, and Brad Lander, all endorsed by the mayor. Both Mr. Lander and Ms. Avila Chevalier are running against incumbents, while Ms. Valdez seeks an open seat.
“This is the team,” Mr. Mamdani states in the ad, which is filmed on a basketball court shaded with a prominent Knicks’ orange color. “This is our year.”
The creation of the advertisement was led by Morris Katz, the mayor’s chief political adviser, with the cost of the regional TV spot reaching approximately $110,000. This expense is shared among the three congressional campaigns.
“It’s a new era in Knicks’ basketball, and it’s time for the same in our politics too,” Mr. Mamdani expressed in a prepared statement. “Much like the Knicks, this slate represents a fight, a selflessness, and a love of New York that will benefit our city,” he added.
