Memphis has experienced a substantial drop in violent crime, seen as a model for other cities. According to recent data, violent crime decreased by over 40% in early 2026 compared to the same time in 2025. This change follows the creation of the Memphis Safe Task Force by President Donald Trump, which involves local, state, and federal agencies plus the Tennessee National Guard.
Data from the Memphis Police Department highlights the reductions:
- Overall violent crime: -40.52%
- Aggravated assault: -28.14%
- Arson: -33.33%
- Burglary: -28.06%
- Homicide: -36%
- Larceny: -39.07%
- Motor vehicle theft: -63.98%
- Robbery: -44.96%
- Sexual assault: -27.43%
Federal law enforcement officials in Memphis, such as those stationed at Beale Street, play a key role in this change.
Sgt. Betsy Brantner Smith from the National Police Association described Memphis as “a blueprint for other cities.” She emphasized the cooperation among law enforcement and the role of proactive prosecution.
The task force has resulted in over 7,400 arrests connected to serious crimes, such as homicides and gang violence, according to the White House. Additionally, authorities confiscated 1,219 illegal weapons and found 150 missing children.
The White House stated in a press release that these efforts demonstrate the impact of strong leadership combined with strict enforcement.
Memphis residents report feeling safer. Bobby Hardin, a local resident, shared his experience, noting that the crime situation has improved from the past years.
The year 2025 saw fewer than 200 murders for the first time since 2019. Sgt. Smith pointed to the visible presence of law enforcement as a significant factor contributing to crime reduction.
Similar results have been observed in Washington, D.C. with a 5% decrease in violent crime for 2026 compared to 2025. A substantial drop of 29% was seen from 2024 to 2025.
Homicides in Washington, D.C. also declined by 53% in 2026 compared to the previous year.
