The New York Mets emerged victorious in the first Subway Series of the season against the New York Yankees, clinching the win in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon.
With runners on first and third in the bottom of the 10th inning and one out, rookie Carson Benge stepped up to the plate. Benge hit a crucial chopper over Yankees reliever Tim Hill’s head.
“Once it went over the pitcher’s head I kind of knew,” Benge said after the game.
A collision between Yankees infielders Anthony Volpe and Max Schuemann prevented them from making the play, allowing Marcus Semien to score the game-winning run for the Mets, who secured a 7-6 victory.
The Yankees held a 6-3 lead entering the bottom of the ninth. Tyrone Taylor was at bat with Benge and Juan Soto on base. With two outs, Taylor hit a pivotal pitch to left field off David Bednar, tying the game. This marked Taylor’s third home run of the season.
“I didn’t know it was going to stay fair,” Taylor commented. “I kind of waited there to see if it would.”
New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe watched as the Mets surged back in the sixth inning with Luis Torrens hitting a two-run RBI double.
The Yankees concluded a nine-game road trip with a 2-7 record and are preparing for a seven-game homestand against American League East competitors, including the Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays.
“Guys are playing tough and making the plays they need to but just coming up a little bit short,” Yankees slugger Aaron Judge mentioned. “We’ve got to have a short memory, move on and get ready … because we’ve got a big division opponent coming in.”
David Bednar, who blew a save for the second time in 12 appearances, saw his ERA rise to 4.95.
“Overall, it’s unacceptable, especially in that spot,” Bednar stated. “It’s just frustrating.”
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza expressed pride in the team’s persistence.
“We get down. We get punched in the face. We get back up,” he declared. “Today was a perfect example when, like I said, we didn’t play our best game and we still are able to shake hands at the end.”
