Amidst claims of sustained retaliation, a whistleblower from the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) has spoken out about the ongoing issues of fraud she has been flagging since 2019. Faye Bernstein, who has served in the Department’s contract management and compliance sector for over two decades, challenges statements made by Governor Tim Walz, declaring his insistence of being unaware of the problem as “absolutely false.”
Whistleblower Facing Retaliation
Bernstein states that for her efforts to notify leadership about illegal contracting practices within the DHS, she faced severe backlash including a “smear campaign” and insults. She was labeled “racist” and had her work responsibilities reduced as a form of retaliation.
“There is just a continuous effort to stifle you, to shut you up. And it is impossible to overcome,” Bernstein revealed on “Saturday in America.”
In her disclosure, Bernstein, who raised concerns persistently at various levels within the organization and reported them “to the Governor’s Office and external oversight bodies,” experienced nearly unbearable retaliation, including being prohibited from accessing DHS property and facing investigations.
Investigation into Massive Welfare Fraud
Federal prosecutors have estimated that up to $9 billion may have been misappropriated through fraudulent operations masquerading as legitimate daycare centers, food programs, and health clinics in Minnesota. The majority of suspects in this still-unfolding investigation belong to the state’s Somali community.
Instead of receiving support for calling attention to contracting irregularities, Bernstein became the target of administrative retaliation, damaging not just her professional life but also her reputation within the department.
“It was that I was, in fact, the bad employee,” she stated regarding the feedback she received from various departments despite her repeated alarms about the ongoing fraud, feeling increasingly like “a broken record.”
The Call for Accountability
Bernstein, identified as a Democrat, criticized the governor for his dismissal of the fraud allegations as mere fiction, stressing that the pressing issue transcends political affiliations. “I see this every day… and it is not make-believe,” she asserted, emphasizing the urgent need for a governor willing to confront the problem head-on, regardless of political orientation.
This disclosure indicates the severity of challenges faced by whistleblowers within governmental frameworks when reporting malfeasance and seeking transparency and accountability.
