MLB Commissioner Manfred Corresponds with Sen. Josh Hawley on Bible Verses Controversy

Senator Josh Hawley received a letter from MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred about the situation involving San Francisco Giants players who wrote Bible verses on their Pride Night hats. Manfred confirmed that the players would not face any disciplinary action for this controversial act.

Appearing on “The Will Cain Show,” Hawley expressed satisfaction with the response from MLB. He mentioned that Manfred admitted a mistake had been made and acknowledged that players have the right to express their religious beliefs. “No player will ever be disciplined or fined for their religious beliefs,” Manfred stated in his letter.

Hawley stressed the importance of recognizing the error and protecting players’ religious freedom. He regarded the response as a positive outcome, albeit one that required his intervention with MLB.

Manfred assured that no player would be compelled to wear political-themed uniforms and that discrimination based on religious beliefs would not occur. Hawley highlighted the irrationality of the entire situation, asserting that Major League Baseball’s actions were unnecessary, but he appreciated the league’s admission of fault.

One Giants player chose not to wear the Pride Night hat during a June 12 game at Oracle Park. Instead, pitcher Sam Hentges wore the standard team hat. Pitchers Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker, and Ryan Walker wrote Bible verses on their caps, which drew public attention. Roupp’s inscription was “Genesis 9:12-16,” referencing God’s covenant with Noah.

MLB initially argued that these writings violated league rules prohibiting alterations to player uniforms. Manfred’s letter mentioned that this rule is part of an agreement with the MLBPA and aims to prevent political or social messaging on apparel. Nonetheless, Hawley and others argued that freedom of religion is protected under the First Amendment.

Hawley concluded by urging a return to traditional values and focusing on the essence of baseball. He dismissed the ongoing issues as unnecessary distractions.
