Monitoring of Potential First Storm in 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season

1 hour ago 0

Meteorologists are closely observing a low-pressure system along the Texas coastline. This system has the potential to evolve into the first named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, which began earlier this month.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30. During this period, most tropical storms and hurricanes typically form in the region. If this system develops into a tropical storm, it will be named Arthur, the first on the list for the year.

Chance of Forming

An update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) on Wednesday morning indicated that the system was heading northeast along the middle Texas coast. It is expected to move inland over southwestern Louisiana by Wednesday night.

The NHC forecasts that the system could strengthen into a tropical storm today. However, weakening is likely once the system moves inland. The NHC noted that the system might dissipate by Wednesday night or early Thursday. They have assessed a 60 percent chance of formation within 48 hours.

Rainfall estimates predict totals of 5 to 10 inches through early Friday. Isolated areas might experience up to 20 inches. The affected regions extend from the upper Texas coast into southern and central Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, as well as parts of western Georgia and the Florida Panhandle. The NHC warns that this may result in life-threatening flash flooding.

Current Alerts

As of early Wednesday, the National Weather Service has issued flood watches stretching from southeastern Texas across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. These extend into the western Florida Panhandle and parts of Georgia.

A tropical storm warning is in effect from Sabine Pass to Morgan City. Additionally, a tropical storm watch is active from Sargent to Sabine Pass.
